Bangor Hydro Electric Company is an electric utility wholly-owned by Emera Inc., based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Bangor Hydro serves a population of 192,000 in a 5,275 square mile area in eastern and east coastal Maine. Bangor Hydro is a member of the New England Power Pool and is interconnected with other New England utilities to the south and with the New Brunswick Power Corp. to the north.
The corporate office is located in Bangor, Maine and the Company has divisions in Lincoln, Ellsworth, and Machias, Maine.
On March 1, 1925, Bangor Hydro incorporated with the consolidation of several small electric companies in eastern Maine. The company operated several Hydro Electric stations on the Union and Penobscot rivers until the late 1990s when, as a result of the Maine Electric Utility Restructuring Act of 1997, Bangor Hydro was required to sell its power plants. Today, Bangor Hydro is responsible for the transmission and delivery aspects of electric service in eastern Maine.
Bangor Hydro employs more than 260 people and is a responsible member of the community supporting a variety of non-profit organizations through corporate donations and volunteer activities. Bangor Hydro holds OSHA's highest safety designation, V.P.P. star status
